The short version
This guide is for non-EU citizens. Not sure you need a TIE? NIE or TIE? Which one you need tells you in 30 seconds.
appointment one
Fingerprints
You go in person. You leave with a receipt confirming you have completed the process.
The hard one to get
appointment two
Collection
Your card takes 35 to 40 days to be issued. Then you go back to collect it.
Easier to book
The hard part is not the paperwork. It’s getting the slot.
What it holds up
Without your TIE, these have to wait.
1
Proving you live here legally.
2
Signing up for public healthcare.
3
Coming back into Spain after a trip abroad.
4
Exchanging a foreign driving licence.
That’s why one late appointment can hold up everything else.
Why it’s so hard
Two things work against you at the same time.
High demand, bottlenecked systems. Especially in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante.
No reliable schedule. New appointments are not released at fixed, transparent times.
And your presence is mandatory, so nobody can go for you. No wonder it gets frustrating.
The TIE is one of Liz’s immigration services: booking the appointment, the fingerprint session and the card collection. Book a free 15-minute call.
Where are you?
A few taps. About thirty seconds.
Quick questions
Can I book it before I arrive in Spain?
Yes. The appointment is booked online, and the best moment is as soon as you have your visa resolution and your flight tickets.
Can someone else go for me?
No. Your fingerprints are taken on the spot, so you have to be there in person.
How long until I have my card?
Its issuance takes 35 to 40 days after your fingerprint appointment. Then you book a second appointment to collect it.
Flights booked, but still no appointment?
Getting this slot is the hard part. I can take care of it for you, along with everything else your move needs. Fifteen minutes with me is all it takes to start.
